Alloa: A successful mixture of tradition, technology and trade

Alloa is a successful mixture of tradition, technology and trade and now enjoys an excellent business infrastructure, emerging as a key location for new enterprises, growth businesses and as a local hub for national or multi-national companies.

Situated in the heart of Scotland, Alloa is a historical town with a rich industrial heritage of wool production, weaving and glass making. Mining also played a key part in the development of the town as the Waggonway, one of Scotland’s earliest railways, took coal from the Sauchie mines to Alloa Harbour as early as 1766.

Perhaps most famous for brewing and malt distilling, Alloa has been home to beer brewers since the late eighteen hundreds when Younger’s opened in the town. Alloa Ale was sent all over the world and in the 1920’s Graham’s Golden Lager, later renamed “Skol”, was first brewed in Alloa.

Even today, Alloa is still home to beer with William Bros. brewing their own unique historical & contemporary beers in the town.

Alloa’s business legacy more widespread still; the multi-national Coats Group plc which is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of sewing thread can also trace roots back to John Paton Son and Co of Alloa in 1814, while The Right Honourable The Lord Forte who founded what is now knows as The Forte Group attended Alloa Academy in the 1920’s.

Now, in the 21st century Alloa is a vibrant College town, the administrative centre of Clackmannanshire Council and the region’s main shopping centre.

The student body at Forth Valley College’s Alloa Campus is mostly made-up of business students whilst a range of supermarkets, niche start-ups and a traditional high street offer an unusual mix of choice, value and adventure!

Alloa is centrally located, providing easy access to the central Scotland motorway network of M876, M9 and M80 via the Clackmannanshire Bridge.  Indeed Glasgow city centre is only 32 miles from the Alloa Town Centre whilst Edinburgh Airport is only 29 miles.

Accessibility has been further enhanced with the re-opening of Alloa Train Station providing regular train links to Stirling (only 9 minutes per journey), Perth, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Only 8 miles from Stirling, The Alloa Business Centre itself provides almost 100 managed and fully serviced offices to let from 138 sq ft to 2,000 sq ft, flexibility for larger multi-room combinations is available if required.
